Top 10 Stores – February Results

When shopping, it looks like Android and iPhone users are (just barely) more the same than different.  Of the top twenty stores most often selected to view when using the Point Inside app, twelve managed to show up in both top 20 lists.  However, there were some notable differences.  For example, Macy’s was #2 on iPhone/iTouch, but didn’t crack the top 20 on Android – yet still had enough views to rank #2 overall.  American Eagle was #5 on Android, but only #17 on iPhone.  The most interesting tidbit?  Apple Store was #1 on both platforms.  (Is that because it starts with an A?)  Stay tuned for next month and we’ll see if anyone can knock Apple from the top spot.  In order, here are the top 10:

1.  Apple Store
2.  Macy’s
3.  Abercrombie & Fitch
4.  Victoria’s Secret
5.  Nordstrom
6.  Banana Republic
7.  The Gap
8.  JC Penney
9.  GameStop
10. Coach

PC World: Skeptical Shopper: Score Deals With Your Mobile Phone

Bargain hunting can be a wearying experience, but these six mobile apps will save you time and money.

Smartphones are costly investments, but they can save you money, too. Did you know that you can use your phone as a bar-code scanner while you are out shopping? Or that you can find in-store coupons through your phone? Dozens of free applications that can help you save cash are available across the major smartphone platforms. Here are the best of these no-cost, must-have apps.

ShopSavvy (Android, iPhone, Symbian): Let’s say that you see a gadget you want, but you’re fairly sure you spotted it at another store for a lower price. ShopSavvy allows you to scan the bar code of any product, using your phone’s built-in camera. The program then searches for the best prices, locally and on the Internet. Instant comparison shopping has never been easier.

Dealert (WebOS): Currently, the Palm App Catalog is pretty sparse when it comes to shopping apps, but Dealert is an indispensable tool for Palm Pre and Pixi owners. With Dealert you can track specific products on many of the major deal sites around the Internet. The app takes advantage of WebOS’s multitasking capabilities, too, as you can set it up to run in the background. It will also alert you via WebOS’s notifications system when products you’re tracking go on sale.

Frucall (all phones): Just because you don’t own a smartphone, that doesn’t mean you can’t get in on the bargain-hunting action. Frucall works with all cell phones–even if you don’t have mobile Web access. The service employs a combination of technologies (SMS, Web, and phone calls) to deliver price-comparison data to you. You simply text or call in a product’s UPC or IBSN, or enter the information at Frucall’s mobile Website.

Point Inside (Android, iPhone): I often wish that Google Maps worked indoors as well as outside–especially in malls. Point Inside to the rescue: This app eases the pain of navigating the labyrinth known as the American mall by providing directories and maps for just about every major shopping center in the United States and Canada. And because Point Inside’s maps are stored within the program, they will work even when no cell or Wi-Fi signal is available. Another perk: You can record the location of your car. You’ll never get lost in a parking garage again.

Coupon Sherpa (iPhone): Sure, you can find quite a few coupon-wrangling apps out there, but Coupon Sherpa is by far the best. Before making an in-store purchase, you can search Coupon Sherpa for any relevant coupons, by category or by store name. At the checkout counter, the cashier can scan the coupon directly from your phone. If you prefer, you can send the coupons to your e-mail account, print them out, and bring them into a store.

Postabon (iPhone, mobile Website): Postabon is one of my favorite new deal-finder Websites, so I was happy to hear that the company also had an iPhone app. Sort of a cross between Foursquare and deal-of-the-day sites such as Woot.com, Postabon allows community members to list deals that they’ve spotted around their city–from retail-store sales to dining specials. Not an iPhone user? You can still find posted deals by going to the mobile version of the Website on your handset. Postabon says that it is developing an Android app, as well.

Is Print Media Dead

Is print media dead? There was a recent discussion on LinkedIn asking, “When was the last time you used the phone book?” The sheer volume of responses was not only impressive but indicative of the general trend towards Just-In-Time Advertising. With such dramatic decline in utility, where are marketing execs going to re-point these dollars?
Online marketing has surged for several reasons. One primary factor is measurability. Money spent on SEO and SEM can be tracked directly to revenue. In tight times, CFOs love and even demand this. Another factor is the ability to effectively manage the shopping experience, up-selling and cross-selling all the way through to conversion.

However, online marketing typically steers people to online sales, and eCommerce accounts for only a small fraction of total retail sales. While print media might inspire someone to get off the couch, readership is spiraling downward and largely ignored by younger generations. Social marketing has tremendous reach but is it relevant to reader behavior at the right moment? Mobile marketing can both point people to your store and inspire them to buy while they are there.

A large part of the success of the Yellow Pages was due to its utility as an on-demand resource (although I’m sure the “monopoly” helped too). Mobile marketing has the unique opportunity to recreate this. Mobile is always available. Mobile is highly-targetable, and most important, mobile is trusted. Consumers develop a very personal relationship with the mobile device. It’s a comfort mechanism and a trusted resource. It’s an entertainment device and a utility.

No…print media is not dead. In-vehicle navigation didn’t lessen the need for highway signs. It just reduced our dependence on them to feel in control. Consumers are discovering new ways to take control, finding new ways to discover brands, and finding new inspiration to buy. Mobile offers your brand a unique opportunity to connect with the shopper with Just-In-Time Advertising.

Point Inside is a mobile application that can reach millions of mall shoppers, providing shoppers with a utility to help them find restrooms, elevators, ATMs and other services. Point Inside also provides mall-based stores with the unique opportunity provided by mobile advertising to be discovered and inspire shoppers to buy while they’re in the mall.

Top 5 Unique Finds at Westfield San Francisco Centre Mall

One of the newest venues in the Point Inside network, Westfield San Francisco Centre is arguably the city’s most popular shopping destination. With over 200 stores and restaurants, including Nordstrom (the second-largest Nordstrom in the U.S. to boot), Bloomingdales, and over 170 other retailers, there’s definitely something for everyone at Westfield San Francisco Centre.

When Point Inside maps a venue, a real person walks every inch of a mall to ensure optimum accuracy and completeness. We fell in love with Westfield San Francisco Centre while doing our mapping research and here are some of our favorite discoveries we found along the way:

  1. Cash in with the mall’s Fab Finds weekly deals. Download this weekly flyer to save serious money on your next trip to Westfield San Francisco Centre.
  2. Treat yourself to valet parking. Yes, valet parking is available at the mall, at not one, but two locations. Find the closest location in a snap using Point Inside, or if you park yourself, use the Point Inside “find my car” feature to quickly locate your vehicle in the parking lot at the end of a long shopping day.
  3. Accessorize with Edition by Banana Republic. Opened in May, 2009, Edition is Banana Republic’s new accessories brand, which is exclusive to San Francisco. This uber-stylish boutique features exquisite and affordable jewelry, handbags, hats, scarves, and more.
  4. Indulge in a gourmet sandwich at ‘wichcraft. Top Chef judge and celebrity chef Tom Colicchio takes sandwiches to new gastronomic heights with this casual bistro, the only location in California. We’re partial to the warm roasted turkey sandwich with avocado, bacon, onion relish, and aioli on toasted ciabatta roll. Yum!
  5. Unwind at Burke Williams Day Spa. Shopping can be hard work, so take a break from the spree and try one of luxury California spa chain Burke Williams’ special signature treatments, like Emilee’s Intrigue, which includes a therapeutic massage followed by an invigorating eucalyptus steam wrap.

Be sure to download Point Inside for free to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android phone before your next visit to Westfield San Francisco Centre so you can find all these mall gems quickly and easily. You’ll also be able to find the closest restroom in a jiffy, locate restaurants and ATMs, and much more for a truly enjoyable shopping experience.
